What is Employees State Insurance (ESI) ?

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is established by ESI Act. It is an autonomous corporation under Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. As we know, it is a legal entity, the corporation can raise loans and take measures for discharging such loans with the prior sanction of the central government and it can acquire both movable and immovable property and all incomes from the property shall vest with the corporation. The corporation can set up hospitals either independently or in collaboration with state government or other private entities, but most of the dispensaries and hospitals are run by concerned state governments. – Wikipedia

Benefits of Employees State Insurance (ESI)

Medical Benefit

The covered individual and his family members enjoy full health coverage from the day the insurance provider enters into employment. The care of an insured person or his family member does not have a cap. Health services shall also be given on a payment of the monthly token premium of Rs.120/- to retired and permanent disabled persons and their spouses

Sickness Benefit

During certified sickness times, sickness Benefit in the form of cash benefits at the rate of 70% of earnings shall be paid to the covered employees, for a duration of 91 days per year. The covered employee must contribute 78 days in a six-month contribution cycle in order to apply for sick leave

Maternity Benefit

The maternity benefit is payable for twenty six (26) weeks of imprisonment and is extended for a further one month at a full-time compensation rate due to contribution for 70 days over the prior two contribution terms for medical counselling at full-time.

Temporary disablement benefit

From day one, insurable jobs and regardless of having paid any contribution for injuries to the workplace. Temporary medical insurance payable as long as disability remains at a cost of 90 percent of the income.

Employees’ State Insurance (abbreviated as ESI) is a self-financing social security and health insurance scheme for Indian workers. The fund is managed by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) according to rules and regulations stipulated in the ESI Act 1948.

The scheme provides full medical care to the employee registered under the ESI Act, 1948 during the period of his incapacity, restoration of his health and working capacity.

Employees whose monthly wages are Rs 21,000 or below are covered under the ESI Act. The wage limit for coverage under the Act had been increased from Rs 15,000 per month to Rs 21,000 in December 2016.

All employees of a covered unit, whose monthly incomes (excluding overtime, bonus, leave encashment) does not exceed Rs. 21,000 per month, are eligible to avail benefits under the Scheme. Employees earning daily average wage up to Rs. 176 are exempted from ESIC contribution.

The Act was originally applicable to non-seasonal factories using power and employing 20 or more persons; but it is now applicable to non-seasonal power using factories employing 10 or more persons and non-power using factories employing 20 or more persons.
